Author's Comments About the Book

The world is full of violence. We hear about it every day and it has become a nightmare for many organizations. Whether at home, at school or work, violence has become a major concern in our society and cannot be ignored.

Workplace violence has increased significantly over the last decade and has become the fastest growing type of homicide in the United States. Its long-term impact, both financially and psychologically, can be devastating, affecting families, co-workers and friends long after an incident has occurred. When it happens, it will change your home, school or workplace forever.

My book, They Never Saw It Coming … An Employer's Guide for Reducing Stress and Violence in the Workplace, represents a summary of many professional experiences, accumulated over 40 years of practice as both a human resource executive and labor and employment lawyer. The book provides guidelines for employers on how to deal with the growing problem of workplace stress and violence. It is only through the development of well-planned and organized employee relations programs in a setting that encourages open communication, honesty and respect, that workplace harmony can be achieved and employees made to feel they are an important part of the organization. The development and implementation of employee-focused programs can alleviate stress, which in turn will reduce the likelihood of an incident of workplace violence.

Being able to recognize the early signs exhibited by a potential violence perpetrator, being familiar with his/her profile, training supervisors to properly handle confrontation and developing policies and programs that encourage open communication among employees and their managers will have a positive effect on eliminating the likelihood of an incident of violence occurring in your organization.

Remember, in every instance of workplace/school violence, there were signs, but those signs went unnoticed or unreported. My book looks at the several aspects related to stress and violence and its impact on individuals and the organization in which they work. Recommendations are offered with one primary objective … to prevent an incident of violence from occurring in your organization.
