.We are all familiar with adding an attachment to an e-mail and sending it off. This works well and provides immediate transfer. However
e-mail is designed for sending smaller text and large file transfer is inefficient. Many Internet Service Providers and corporate mail servers limit e-mails to 5 or even 2 MB. No e-mail server will accept
a file greater than 10 MB.
If you have a need to send larger files, file transfer protocol or FTP is probably the solution. Often when you download a driver or software
from the web you are transferred from HTTP protocol to FTP and probably are not aware of it.
However, to set up a system to send and receive files via FTP on a continual basis you have to either set up an FTP mail box system or set up an FTP
server.
FTP mail boxes are rented much like e-mail mail boxes are rented. If you have a hosted domain name e-mail service now, it can be upgraded to
accommodate FTP as well as e-mail for a small amount more.
If you have a static IP internet access, and a router that is able to handle FTP, you can set up an FTP server using a single dedicated pc using
Windows XP.
You will need an FTP access software and your FTP Mail box or server will have user names and passwords to allow access. Many FTP access
software packages allow you to enter the user name and password where it is retained for future use without reentering.
Once set up, you transfer the file to the FTP server using the FTP access software. Once transferred, others with access to the FTP box
retrieve it using their FTP access software. The transfer is accomplished very much like transferring a file in Windows Explorer. The transfer speed is governed by your ISP connection speed.
The FTP server is usually a temporary holding box – and you need to empty it once the file has been transferred to all users. This is
especially important for rented FTP boxes where you are charged a storage feel based on the amount stored.
