What is the Best High Speed Internet Service for Me?

Gene T. Bohn

In recent years, high speed internet service has become more available and in several cases, more than one provider is available. All have their advantages and disadvantages. However, the decision should not be made lightly.

What is the Best High Speed Internet Service For Me and What Do I Need to do to ?

Internet access as essential as a telephone. Dial up has become too slow – which requires conversion to a high speed access. Many are confused or unsure what is best for them – and what else is needed. Below is a general guideline of what is needed.

Determine what you will be using the Internet for. This includes e mail, Web access, file transfers, Virtual Private Network (VPN) links to permit access from other locations over the Internet, etc. This defines needed speed and static IP address need.

With the speed known, check into what is available. Service providers, called ISPs include telephone companies (Telcos), cable TV (CATV) providers and wireless companies. ISPs offer packages. Telco offerings include DSL and voice, integrated voice and data T1, and T1 service. CATV packages include Cable Internet, TV and sometimes voice.

The best choice for you is now determined by availability and cost. Some general guidelines are:

  • DSL is usually the lowest cost but is not available everywhere and speed may not be sufficient.
  • Integrated T 1 (both voice and Internet service) can be cost effective and is available in many places.
  • T 1 and Fractional T 1 Internet service is available everywhere but is more expensive.
  • CATV, where available can be very suitable. Sometimes there is a costly CATV install fee.
  • Wireless carriers offer favorable speed and cost when available. Weather influences it however.
  • Carriers require a 1 year minimum contract with a cost break for 3 year duration. Most have install costs.

You need a computer network (LAN) and an interface (firewall – router) to your LAN. Selection of a firewall – router and its install is usually best done by a trained person. Because this is the gateway to your LAN, a business class unit should be used. Consider a wired LAN vs. wireless one (more on that in a future article).

You will change your e mail addresses and set up an e mail client (e.g. Outlook Express) for each e mail address. ISPs provide a handful of e mail addresses and encourage you to purchase a domain to provide domain named e mail. ISPs often charge more for domain e mail than does a third party.

Usually you are best served by having someone trained in this specialty work with you through all these steps.

E Commerce Technology Michiana, Inc. will examine in detail your LAN, advise you of its suitability and upgrade needs, assist in determining the speed you need, the merit of a static IP, the need for domain name e mail addresses, and all other issues so you do not end up with unbudgeted surprises. We welcome the opportunity to discuss suitable high speed Internet service and related equipment needs for your facility. Call us at 574 848 9386 for a no cost, no obligation initial discussion of this or any other Computer or Phone system question you may have.
